Charism

The charism of the LSP is compassionate care for the elderly poor, inspired by the love of Christ and the Gospel call to serve the most vulnerable. Sisters integrate prayer, community life, and active service, creating homes where the elderly are treated with dignity, respect, and familial love. Their spirituality emphasizes humility, simplicity, and selfless service, making daily life a witness of God’s mercy and care.

Short History

The congregation was founded in 1839 in France by St. Jeanne Jugan, who began by welcoming and caring for the destitute elderly in her community. The congregation expanded rapidly, establishing homes for the elderly in Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. In Africa, including Kenya and Tanzania, the LSP continue to provide residential care, healthcare, and spiritual support to the elderly, combining their contemplative prayer life with practical service, faithful to their founding vision of Christ’s love in action.
