Charism

The charism of the SSpS is missionary outreach inspired by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, combining evangelization, education, healthcare, and social services. Sisters integrate prayer, community life, and active ministry, seeking to spread the Gospel and serve marginalized communities. Their spirituality emphasizes obedience, humility, simplicity, and zeal for mission, focusing on holistic human development and the promotion of justice, peace, and faith in regions where they serve.

Short History

The congregation was founded in 1889 in Steyl, the Netherlands, by St. Arnold Janssen, as the female counterpart to the Society of the Divine Word. From the beginning, the sisters focused on missionary work, accompanying priests in foreign missions and establishing their own schools, hospitals, and pastoral programs. The SSpS expanded rapidly to Asia, Latin America, and Africa, arriving in East Africa in the early 20th century, including Kenya and Tanzania, where they continue their work in education, healthcare, and evangelization, faithfully living their missionary charism guided by the Holy Spirit.
