Charism

The charism of the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is to live Marian humility and availability in service of Christ’s mission, especially through education, pastoral care, and works of mercy. Inspired by Mary’s “yes,” the sisters dedicate themselves to forming Christian communities rooted in prayer, simplicity, and joyful service. Their life reflects a deep trust in God and a readiness to respond to the needs of the Church wherever they are sent.

Short History

The congregation was founded in the 19th century (various autonomous foundations use the ASBVM name) in Europe, with roots in Marian spirituality and apostolic service. Over time, different branches bearing the same title developed in Africa, Asia, and Europe, especially to support local Churches through schools, catechesis, health care, and parish ministry. In East Africa, the name ASBVM is commonly used by locally founded Marian congregations inspired by the mystery of the Assumption and the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
