Main Stream: Visitandines
The charism of the Visitandine Sisters is a contemplative life of humble service and loving fidelity to God, lived out in the spirit of gentle devotion and interior prayer. Rooted in the example of the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, this charism emphasizes a simple and hidden life of prayer, humility, and charity, where the sisters devote themselves to the Liturgy of the Hours, mental prayer, and the Eucharist, offering their lives in intercession for the Church and world. Their spirituality is characterized by gentleness, trust in divine providence, and joyful obedience, reflecting the loving presence of Christ in everyday life.
The Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary was founded in 1610 in Annecy, France, by St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Frances de Chantal, as a religious institute open to women who desired a contemplative life of prayer without the rigorous austerities of many monastic orders of the time. Though originally intended as an active community combining prayer with works of mercy, ecclesiastical norms soon placed the Visitandines in papal enclosure, making them a cloistered contemplative order. Despite this enclosure, the sisters’ spirituality remained deeply pastoral in heart, focused on devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and service through prayer. Over the centuries, Visitandine monasteries were established across Europe and later in the Americas and Asia, preserving St. Francis de Sales’ gentle, Christ-centered approach to the interior life.
