Main Stream: The Cross
The charism of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod is to participate in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus — His death and resurrection — in the world for the salvation of all, especially by revealing God’s merciful love and the liberating power of Christ. This charism is lived in a spirit of detachment, humility, joyful self-surrender, and collaboration with others in works of mercy and justice. The sisters draw on a blend of Ignatian and Salesian spiritualities but with a distinctive emphasis on living the cross of Christ as a source of salvation and compassionate service.
The Congregation of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod was founded in 1838 in Chavanod, France, by Mother Claudine Echernier in close collaboration with Fr. Peter Mermier, inspired by the needs of society following the upheavals of the French Revolution. Their early mission focused on education and evangelization of poor youth and women. From its origins in France, the congregation expanded internationally and today has a presence on four continents in around 15–16 countries, engaging in a wide range of ministries including education, health, pastoral care, and social development.
