Main Stream: St. Charles de Foucauld
The charism of the Little Sisters of Jesus is rooted in a profound desire to live the Gospel in the simplicity and humility of Jesus’ hidden life in Nazareth. They embrace a contemplative presence in the world, living among ordinary people, sharing in daily work and life situations to bear witness to Christ’s love and unity. Their life is a blend of prayer, friendship, and humble service, seeking to make the Church known and experienced through respectful relationships with those around them, especially the poor and least considered in society.
The Little Sisters of Jesus were founded on 8 September 1939 in Touggourt, French Algeria by Little Sister Magdeleine of Jesus (Madeleine Hutin), who was deeply inspired by the life and writings of St. Charles de Foucauld. From their beginnings living with Saharan nomads, the community gradually spread its presence worldwide, establishing small fraternities in ordinary dwellings among diverse populations. Over time, their Constitutions received definitive approval from the Catholic Church, and the congregation grew significantly, with communities in dozens of countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Their mission has consistently been to live “in the world” yet rooted in Eucharistic prayer and simple fraternity.
