Charism

The charism of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Immaculate is lived out in their mission to manifest the redeeming love of Jesus through active engagement in the family apostolate, proclamation of the Word of God, and various works of evangelization and service. They bring Christ’s love to individuals, families, and communities by teaching, counseling, visiting homes, and participating in parish and social ministries. Their vocation is deeply rooted in Marian spirituality and the belief that God’s mercy and salvation are to be shared generously with all people, especially those who are distant from the Gospel or in need of hope and healing.

Short History

The Missionary Sisters of Mary Immaculate were founded on 8 September 1962, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, at Kulathuvayal in Kerala, India by Msgr. C. J. Varkey under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Initially formed as a pious union, the community grew steadily and was raised to the status of a congregation of Pontifical Right on 15 October 1988 by Pope John Paul II. From its Indian roots, the MSMI expanded its missionary outreach to numerous dioceses in India and abroad, serving in education, family ministry, healthcare, counseling, and various apostolic works. Today, under the leadership of the Superior General and her council, they continue to witness Christ’s redemptive love in diverse settings around the world.
