Main Stream: Sacred Heart of Jesus
The charism of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is rooted in manifesting the redemptive love of Jesus to the world. Through prayer, service, and fraternal community life, the sisters seek to live out Christ’s compassionate heart by fostering unity, love, and healing among people. Their ministries emphasize education, pastoral outreach, care for the marginalized, and social justice, as they strive to make the love of Christ tangible in places of need and division.
The congregation was founded on 6 April 1975 in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria by the Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Benin City with a vision to embody Christ’s love and reconciliation in a society marked by division and hardship. Over the decades, the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have grown into a vibrant community present not only in several Nigerian dioceses but also internationally, serving in education, healthcare, pastoral outreach, and advocacy for peace and unity. Their 50th anniversary is being celebrated in 2025, marking half a century of dedicated service to the Church and humanity.
