Main Stream: Apostolic and Contemplative Religious Congregation
The charism of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy is rooted in the message of Divine Mercy, with a deep commitment to proclaiming and living out Christ’s merciful love in the world. They strive to make God’s infinite mercy known through prayer, apostolic work, and devotion to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Influenced profoundly by the life and writings of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, the sisters seek to draw weary and spiritually burdened souls to the loving heart of Jesus, offering hope, healing, and reconciliation as they follow Christ’s command to be merciful as the Father is merciful.
The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy was founded on 1 November 1862 in Warsaw, Poland, by Mother Teresa Eva Potocka at the invitation of Archbishop Zygmunt Szczesny Feliński. Initially, the sisters opened a “House of Mercy” to offer refuge, education, and moral renewal to women and girls in need. Over the years, the congregation spread beyond Poland, establishing communities in the United States (Boston and Washington, D.C.) and other countries. The congregation gained wider recognition through the life of St. Faustina Kowalska, who entered the community in 1925 and became one of its most influential spiritual figures, bringing worldwide attention to their mission of Divine Mercy. Today the sisters continue this mission, living a balance of prayer and apostolic outreach rooted in mercy.
