Charism

The charism of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver is centered on missionary service and evangelization, especially among the poor and marginalized. They dedicate their lives to serving the Church’s missionary outreach by making the Good News of Jesus Christ known and loved through prayer, sacrifice, and active mission involvement. Inspired by the example of St. Peter Claver — a Jesuit missionary known for his work among enslaved people — the Sisters seek to awaken in all Christians a deeper awareness of their baptismal call to mission and to support missionaries worldwide.

Short History

The Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver were founded in 1894 in Salzburg, Austria by Blessed Mary Theresa Ledóchowska, a Polish religious woman deeply committed to missionary causes. Initially formed as a sodality to support missions in Africa, the group developed into a fully recognized religious congregation, receiving its first approbation toward the end of the 19th century and later Pontifical status. Over the years, the Sisters expanded globally, establishing communities on several continents and continuing their work in missionary animation, education, and support for mission efforts. Today they serve in numerous countries across Africa, Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania.
