The charism of the OLA Sisters is to be living witnesses of Christ’s love by bringing the Good News of salvation to all peoples, especially those who have not yet heard it. Rooted in Gospel values, their mission emphasizes primary evangelization and solidarity with the poor, with special attention to women and children. Their spirituality draws inspiration from the Cenacle (the Upper Room) where Mary and the Apostles awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit, fostering prayerful dependence on the Spirit in their missionary outreach.
The congregation was founded in 1876 in Lyon, France by Venerable Father Augustine Planque, the first Superior General of the Society of African Missions (SMA), in response to the urgent need for women missionaries on the African continent. From their first foundations, the OLA Sisters committed themselves to evangelization “ad Gentes,” especially in Africa. Over the decades, they established communities and ministries across 19 countries in Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, living out their mission of proclaiming the Gospel, serving the poor, and promoting human dignity.
