Charism

The charism of the Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo is to incarnate God’s compassionate love to all people, especially the poor and marginalized, through Christian education and service in all their ministries. This charism flows from a deep commitment to bringing Christ’s love into everyday life by educating, healing, and uplifting individuals and communities, rooted in Gospel values and missionary zeal.

Short History

The congregation was founded on 27 September 1684 by Father Adrien Bresy, parish priest of Wez-Velvain in the Diocese of Tournai, Belgium. At the time, poverty, famine, illiteracy, and sickness plagued the region, and Fr. Bresy began educating poor girls, drawing five dedicated women who joined him in forming a religious community dedicated to Christian education and service. The sisters’ foundation coincided with the centenary of the death of St. Charles Borromeo, whom they chose as their patron for his zeal in Church reform and education. Over the centuries, the sisters have expanded their mission worldwide, including in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, engaging in education, pastoral ministry, and social outreach.
