The charism of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres centers on living and proclaiming the love and tenderness of Christ through works of charity, education, and care for the sick and poor. Rooted in a Christ-centered, paschal spirituality, they strive to exemplify Gospel love in simplicity, community, and active service to others. Their spirituality draws inspiration from St. Paul the Apostle, whom they follow as a model of missionary zeal and devotion to the Gospel.
The congregation was founded in 1696 in Levesville-la-Chenard, France by Father Louis Chauvet, a parish priest who responded to the needs of the poor and uneducated by inviting young women to teach and care for the needy. In 1708, the Bishop of Chartres entrusted the community to his care and gave them the name “Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres” after their patron, St. Paul the Apostle. From those humble beginnings, the sisters expanded rapidly, establishing missions in French Guiana (1727) and later spreading their work internationally throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania.
