Charism

The charism of the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception is to manifest God’s universal compassion through a simple and communal lifestyle of service, especially among the poor, marginalized, and brokenhearted. Rooted in Franciscan spirituality — following closely the example of St. Francis and St. Clare — the sisters are called to live in deep communion with God and with others, embracing all people with a non‑dominating love. Their mission is expressed through prayer, witness, reconciliation, and service that brings healing and wholeness to the world.

Short History

The Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception were founded in 1873 by Elizabeth Hayes (Mother Mary Ignatius of Jesus), a convert from Anglicanism who felt called to extend the Franciscan mission internationally. From their first mission in Belle Prairie, Minnesota, USA, the congregation expanded globally — establishing communities in Australia, Bolivia, Canada, England, Italy, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Ireland, South Sudan, and the United States among others. Their Generalate is now located in Rome, Italy, where they live in community alongside other women religious institutes. Over the decades, the M.F.I.C. Sisters have engaged in a wide variety of ministries including education, healthcare, pastoral work, advocacy for justice, and support for the vulnerable, always guided by Franciscan values of simplicity, joy, and service.
