The charism of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception is to be fruitful members of the Church through total dedication to Christ, poor and humble, in prayer, sacrifice, and apostolic action. They strive to restore the Lord’s vineyard by living out Gospel simplicity, fidelity to the Church, and active service among the poor and marginalized. Community life, prayer, and work are integrated so that each sister lives Franciscan values in daily witness to Christ’s love.
The congregation’s roots go back to missionary foundations tied to the Franciscan family and the Franciscan tradition of service. Their St. Clare Province in California and Mexico was established in 1972, celebrating a 50th anniversary in 2022. The sisters have historical ties to Franciscan missionaries and a long heritage of serving in education, healthcare, pastoral care, and social ministries in both the Americas and beyond. Their earlier beginnings extend from foundations in Mexico and the movement of sisters northward during periods of religious persecution, settling and expanding their mission work. Today they operate schools, healthcare centers, retreat houses, homes for the elderly, and formation houses, embodying a Franciscan approach to mission.
