Charism

The charism of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd is rooted in the merciful love of Christ the Good Shepherd, which calls them to empower lives, uphold human dignity, and restore the rights and worth of every person, especially women and children who are vulnerable or excluded. Their spirituality is expressed through works of compassion, advocacy for justice, and ministries that address systemic inequality and promote reconciliation, all grounded in prayer, community life, and Gospel values

Short History

The origins of the Good Shepherd Sisters extend back to the 17th century when St. John Eudes founded the Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge to care for impoverished and distressed women. In 1835, St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier established the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd in Angers, France, with a specific commitment to serving girls and women in difficulty. Over time, the congregation grew and began ministries throughout Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, expanding its focus to include education, social justice, pastoral care, and the empowerment of vulnerable populations.
