The charism of the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Cross is to proclaim God’s love and mercy as revealed in the Cross of Christ and to witness Franciscan compassion and joy in service to the Church and the world. Rooted deeply in the Franciscan tradition of poverty, humility, and simplicity, the sisters live a life of prayer and community while engaging actively in ministries that uphold human dignity, bring healing to the suffering, and foster reconciliation. Their spiritual identity emphasizes the mystery of Christ’s redemptive suffering, inviting all people to see the Cross as a source of hope and transformation, and their mission places them where human need intersects with Gospel witness — in education, healthcare, parish and pastoral work, retreat ministry, and social outreach. Their life flows from daily Eucharist, communal prayer, and the Franciscan call to serve where Christ’s love is most needed.
The Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Cross were founded in 1862 in Baden-Baden, Germany, by Mother Maria Theresia Bonzel in response to the charitable needs of her time, especially care for the sick, orphans, and the poor. From their beginnings caring for the vulnerable in their local community, the sisters embraced Franciscan life in a canonical structure that combined contemplative fidelity with active ministries. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries they expanded beyond Germany into the United States, where they served in education and healthcare, establishing schools, hospitals, and social services. Over time they became internationally recognized, and today the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Cross serve in several countries, carrying on Mother Bonzel’s vision of compassionate service in the spirit of the Cross.
