The charism of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist centers on living and sharing the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and embodying Franciscan love in service, prayer, and community. Their spirituality seeks to unite Franciscan simplicity and joy with deep Eucharistic devotion, making Christ’s presence the heart of their communal life and mission. This charism inspires them to minister in ways that foster reconciliation, healing, and human dignity, particularly through education, pastoral care, parish ministry, retreats, and work with families and youth. Their life is animated by prayer, community, and creative service, always focused on bringing others closer to the presence of Christ in daily life.
The Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist were founded in 1973 in Connecticut, USA, when a group of women, with the guidance of Father James R. O’Donnell, O.F.M. Cap., felt called to establish a new way of living Franciscan life that emphasized Eucharistic devotion and missionary outreach. Originally part of a wider Franciscan movement, they discerned a distinct vocation that integrated contemplative prayer, especially Eucharistic adoration, with active ministries of service. The congregation grew over the following decades, receiving canonical recognition and expanding its presence.
