Charism

The charism of the Missionaries of Africa, commonly known as the White Fathers, is centered on evangelization, inculturation, and pastoral service in Africa. Inspired by Blessed Cardinal Charles Lavigerie, the congregation seeks to bring the Gospel to African peoples while respecting local cultures, promoting education, social development, and interreligious dialogue. Members live in community life, commit to evangelical poverty, chastity, and obedience, and dedicate themselves to formation of local clergy, missionary work, and social justice, emphasizing the integration of faith with culture and community life.

Short History

The Missionaries of Africa were founded in 1868 in Algeria by Charles Lavigerie, Archbishop of Carthage, in response to the need for missionary outreach across the African continent. Their distinctive white habit gave rise to the name “White Fathers.” From the beginning, they focused on spreading the Catholic faith, training indigenous clergy, and serving in education and social programs. Today, the White Fathers are present in over 30 African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, engaging in parish ministry, education, health care, and peace-building initiatives while maintaining deep respect for local cultures.
