The charism of the Comboni Missionaries, founded by Saint Daniel Comboni, is dedicated to evangelization, pastoral care, and social development among African peoples, with a focus on missionary service in regions where the Church is young or poor. Members live in community, poverty, chastity, and obedience, engaging in education, health care, parish ministry, formation of local clergy, and development programs. Their spirituality emphasizes solidarity with marginalized peoples, intercultural respect, and holistic mission, combining preaching the Gospel with practical service to communities in need.
The Comboni Missionaries were founded in 1867 in Verona, Italy, by Daniel Comboni, who devoted his life to the evangelization and development of Africa. Initially focused on the Sudan region, the congregation grew rapidly, receiving pontifical approval in 1885. Over the decades, the M.C.C.J. expanded throughout Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia, establishing missions, schools, and health centers. Today, they have a strong presence in East Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and South Sudan, continuing Comboni’s vision of serving the spiritual, educational, and social needs of African communities.
