The charism of the Marist Brothers, formally known as the Little Brothers of Mary, is focused on Christian education, youth formation, and pastoral care, inspired by Saint Marcellin Champagnat. Members dedicate themselves to educating and evangelizing young people, particularly those most neglected, emphasizing family spirit, simplicity, presence, and love for the poor. Their spirituality fosters community life, prayer, and personal holiness, aiming to accompany youth in their intellectual, spiritual, and social development in a holistic manner.
The Marist Brothers were founded in 1817 in Lyon, France, by Marcellin Champagnat, who sought to address the educational needs of rural children and the marginalized. The congregation quickly expanded throughout France and then internationally, establishing schools, technical institutes, and youth programs worldwide. Today, the Marist Brothers are present in over 80 countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, running schools, orphanages, and youth centers, while maintaining a strong commitment to forming both young people and local educators in the Marist spirit.
