The charism of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word is centered on evangelization through the modern communication of the Catholic faith, especially using media, prayer, and preaching to bring people back to the Gospel. Founded in the Franciscan tradition, the friars live a life of prayer, Eucharistic adoration, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and obedience to the Magisterium, seeking to proclaim the truth and beauty of the Catholic faith through television, radio, internet, publishing, retreats, and teaching. Their spirituality emphasizes nurturing both their own interior life and the spiritual welfare of those they reach, especially helping Catholics grow or return to active faith.
The Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word were founded in 1987 by Mother Angelica of the Annunciation, PCPA, the same founder of the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) and the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, located in the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Originally established as a public clerical association of the faithful in the Franciscan tradition, their members include priests, brothers, and seminarians who embrace poverty, chastity, and obedience while dedicating themselves to the “new evangelization” through media and spiritual outreach. Their apostolate grew alongside EWTN, and they continue to serve the spiritual needs of its employees, pilgrims, and the wider Church by preaching, teaching, and broadcasting the Catholic faith worldwide.
