Charism

The charism of the Society of St. Pius X is to preserve and promote the traditional Roman Catholic liturgy, theology, and pastoral practice as expressed in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Traditional Latin Mass). Members — priests, brothers, and seminarians — dedicate themselves to sacramental ministry, catechesis, preaching, retreats, and formation of the faithful with fidelity to pre-Vatican II liturgical and doctrinal practices. Their spirituality emphasizes devotion to the Eucharist, the Virgin Mary, the saints, and fidelity to the Church’s traditional teachings, aiming to strengthen the faith and piety of Catholics worldwide.

Short History

The Society of St. Pius X was founded in 1970 in Ecône, Switzerland, by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in response to perceived liturgical and doctrinal changes in the Church following the Second Vatican Council. It began as a priestly society of traditionalist Catholic priests devoted to the Tridentine Mass and faithful catechesis, quickly expanding to seminaries, priories, and chapels around the world. Today, the SSPX has a global presence with seminaries, chapels, schools, and missions in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, often working in areas where faithful traditional Catholic communities seek formation and the sacraments in the Extraordinary Form.
