The charism of the Missionary Society of St. Paul is rooted in missionary evangelization ad gentes, inspired by St. Paul the Apostle and the vision of its founder, Joseph De Piro. Members — priests and brothers — commit themselves to proclaim the Gospel to peoples and cultures where Christ has not yet been proclaimed or where the Church is still developing, respecting local traditions and fostering formation of Christian communities, social outreach, and collaboration with the laity. Their spirituality emphasizes missionary zeal, communion, hospitality, solidarity, and encounter with those on the peripheries of Church and society, following the missionary strategies of St. Paul and De Piro’s own emphasis on evangelization.
The Missionary Society of St. Paul was founded on 30 June 1910 in Malta by Monsignor Joseph De Piro with the aim of forming a missionary congregation committed to spreading the Catholic faith ad gentes. The Society received its first diocesan approval in 1921, and despite early challenges following the founder’s death, it grew and spread its missionary work internationally. Over the past century, the M.S.S.P. has engaged in missionary service in various countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe, adapting its apostolate to meet local needs and maintain fidelity to its missionary calling. The Society continues to live De Piro’s dream of evangelization, rooted in Pauline spirituality and missionary collaboration with local Churches and lay partners.
