The charism of the Missionary Servants of the Poor (Latin Congregatio Missionariorum Servorum Pauperum) is centered on serving the poorest of the poor with charity without limits, seeing Christ in those who suffer and acting to bring them both spiritual and material support. Inspired by Blessed Giacomo Cusmano, the congregation’s spirituality emphasizes the Cross, humility, obedience, deep prayer, and Eucharistic devotion, striving to bring the riches of the Church to the poor through mercy, compassion, education, and community outreach. Members live their mission through works of mercy, care for the marginalized, and solidarity with those abandoned by society, recognizing that in serving them they serve Christ himself.
The Missionary Servants of the Poor were canonically established in 1887 as a clerical religious congregation of pontifical right by Blessed Giacomo Cusmano in Italy, built upon a desire to respond to the social and spiritual needs of the lost and abandoned. Over time, the congregation spread beyond Europe into missions worldwide, establishing communities in countries such as France, Mexico, Brazil, India, the Philippines, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they engage in education, parish work, healthcare support, and pastoral ministry directed at impoverished populations. Their foundation and growth reflect a deep commitment to living out the Gospel through charity without limits, following Cusmano’s vision of serving Christ present in the poor.
