The charism of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God is grounded in hospitality and compassionate care for the sick, suffering, and marginalized, living out the beatitudes of Christ by serving those in need with dignity and love. Inspired by St. John of God, they dedicate their lives to health care, nursing, holistic support, education, and social services for people of all ages, especially the poor and vulnerable, witnessing God’s merciful love through humble and practical service.
The Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God was founded in 1572 when Pope Pius V approved the congregation under the Rule of St. Augustine. It traces its origins to St. John of God (1495–1550), a Portuguese layman who dedicated his life to caring for the sick in Granada, Spain; he was later canonized and declared patron of hospitals and the sick. Over the centuries, the Brothers have established a global presence in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools, and social service programs across more than 40 countries, carrying out health and humanitarian ministries rooted in the Gospel of mercy. The order has distinct formation and mission structures around the world, including an African province (St. Augustine Province of Africa) with formation and scholasticate centres in places like Nairobi, Kenya.
