The charism of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette is centered on reconciliation and healing of relationship with God and neighbor, inspired by the message of Our Lady of La Salette’s apparition in France in 1846. Members — priests and brothers — dedicate themselves to evangelization, pastoral care, preaching, the celebration of the Eucharist, and reconciliation ministries, carrying forward Mary’s call to “make her message known” and to foster conversion, peace, and unity wherever they serve. Their spirituality emphasizes penitence, prayer, mercy, and compassionate outreach to those estranged from faith or community.
The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette were founded in 1852 in La Salette‑Fallavaux, France, by Bishop Philibert de Bruillard, shortly after the reported Marian apparition to two young shepherds, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat in 1846. The congregation’s origin was to care for pilgrims and mission the Gospel in light of Mary’s message. Over the ensuing decades the community received pontifical approval, expanded globally, and established provinces and missions across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. They serve in parishes, retreat centers, evangelization programs, youth ministries, and reconciliation efforts, maintaining a missionary presence in places such as Angola and Madagascar in Africa and beyond.
