The Clerics Regular of St. Paul, commonly known as the Barnabite Fathers, live out a charism centered on the renewal of faith and evangelization, inspired by St. Paul the Apostle and their founder St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria. Their spiritual life is marked by devotion to the Crucified and Eucharistic Christ, communal prayer, pastoral zeal, and study of the Scriptures, especially the Pauline letters, bringing the Gospel into the lived experience of the faithful. The Barnabites embrace pastoral ministry, preaching, catechesis, education, spiritual direction, and sacramental service, striving to awaken hearts to Christ through humility, compassion, and evangelical charity.
The Clerics Regular of St. Paul were founded in 1530 in Milan, Italy by St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria, with the approval of Pope Clement VII soon after, as a community of clerics dedicated to renewing Christian life through preaching, catechesis, and sacramental ministry. They became widely known as the Barnabites because their first house was attached to the church of St. Barnabas in Milan. Throughout their history they have served in education, parish work, missionary outreach, retreats, and spiritual renewal movements. Over the centuries the Barnabites expanded globally, including into Africa (e.g., Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania), Europe, the Americas, and Asia, adapting their apostolate to the needs of the Church in each culture.
