Charism

The charism of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit is to live and proclaim Christ’s priesthood and the work of the Holy Spirit by fostering spiritual renewal, holiness of life, deep Eucharistic devotion, and missionary outreach. Inspired by their founder Venerable Félix de Jesús Rougier, members — priests, brothers, and seminarians — dedicate themselves to encouraging God’s people to live out their baptismal priesthood, to serve in parish ministry, spiritual direction, retreats, and seminary formation, and to witness Christ’s love and mercy in their communities. Their spirituality emphasizes the Holy Spirit as the source of renewal, prayerful union with God, and compassionate service to the poor and marginalized.

Short History

The Missionaries of the Holy Spirit were founded on December 25, 1914 in Mexico City, Mexico, by Father Félix de Jesús Rougier, with ecclesiastical approval following in 1939. The congregation grew out of a desire to promote spiritual renewal, deep union with Christ the Priest, and apostolic service under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Over the decades, the M.Sp.S. spread mainly throughout Latin America, the United States, Europe, and parts of Africa, establishing communities, parishes, seminaries, and retreat centers. They continue to serve the Church through pastoral ministry, education, spiritual formation, and missionary outreach in countries where they are invited.
