The Congregation of St. Basil, known as the Basilians, lives out a charism centered on education and evangelization. Members — priests, seminarians, and associates — dedicate themselves to sharing the Catholic faith through teaching, pastoral ministry, and formation of young people and adults. Their spirituality emphasizes living out Christ the Teacher’s mission by integrating goodness, discipline, and knowledge in all aspects of ministry, promoting faith, intellectual formation, and compassionate service in schools, parishes, and campus ministries. Education for the Basilians is both an apostolate and a way of encountering Jesus Christ, fostering holistic growth in faith and service.
The Congregation of St. Basil was founded on 21 November 1822 in Annonay, France by a small group of diocesan priests committed to educating youth and forming future priests following the upheavals of the French Revolution. Over time, they received pontifical recognition and expanded their ministry, establishing schools and parishes in Canada and the United States in the mid‑19th century. In the 20th century the Basilians further extended their apostolate into Latin America, notably Mexico and Colombia. Today the Basilians continue their educational and pastoral mission in schools, colleges, campus ministries, and parishes across North America and parts of Latin America, remaining faithful to their founding mission of evangelization through teaching.
