The charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart is centered on education, evangelization, and Christian formation of youth, especially those who are poor, marginalized, or at risk. Inspired by their founder Father André Coindre, the Brothers live in community and dedicate themselves to prayer, brotherhood, and service, focusing on shaping young lives through schools, youth centers, and pastoral outreach. Their mission flows from a deep love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which they seek to make present by nurturing faith, compassion, and dignity in the students and communities they serve.
The Brothers of the Sacred Heart were founded on 30 September 1821 in Lyon, France, by Father André Coindre, who began by caring for poor and abandoned youth in the aftermath of the French Revolution. From these humble beginnings, the congregation grew into a Pontifical Right congregation whose primary mission was the education and evangelization of young people. Despite early challenges, the Brothers expanded internationally throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and today serve in about 32 countries across Africa, the United States, Canada, Europe, and Latin America, operating schools, youth programs, and pastoral ministries. Their work in Africa includes educational and formation ministries in countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Lesotho, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and Mozambique, where they accompany students and communities in holistic growth rooted in the Gospel.
