Charism

The Brotherhood of Hope is a Catholic community of consecrated brothers whose charism is to proclaim the all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ and engage in evangelization, fellowship, and renewal of faith, particularly among college and university students on secular campuses. Members — consecrated brothers who take lifelong vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience — live in community, prayer, and mission, seeking to help young adults encounter Christ through relational outreach, sacramental life, retreats, and discipleship formation. Their spirituality emphasizes deep friendship with Christ, joyful fraternity, and radical consecration to the Lord’s mission, viewing their life together as a witness of hope for the Church and the world.

Short History

The Brotherhood of Hope was founded in 1980 in Newark, New Jersey, USA, by Father Philip Merdinger, a priest of the Catholic Church, together with laymen who were inspired to consecrate their lives to God and evangelize the spiritual needs of young adults. Initially serving at Rutgers University, the community later moved its headquarters to Boston, Massachusetts, and received ecclesiastical recognition under the local bishop. Since its beginnings, the Brotherhood has grown into a community of vowed brothers serving in campus ministries at multiple secular universities across the United States, with outreach on campuses such as Northeastern, Rutgers, the University of Central Florida, University of South Florida, and the University of Minnesota. Their mission is rooted in the New Evangelization, responding to contemporary spiritual challenges among youth and young adults with a life-giving witness of community, prayer, and gospel proclamation.
