Charism

The Missionaries of Christ Jesus (M.C.J.) are a Catholic religious institute whose members dedicate themselves to evangelization, service to the poor, pastoral ministry, and missionary outreach, inspired by the love of Christ and His call to serve those most in need. Their spirituality is shaped by total consecration to the mission of spreading the Good News, emphasizing faith, charity, prayer, and closeness to Christ in service to others. The institute’s focus is on carrying Christ’s presence into diverse environments — often challenging mission territories — to proclaim the Gospel and accompany local communities in faith and life.

Short History

The Missionaries of Christ Jesus were founded on 14 March 1944 in Javier, Spain, by María Camino Sanz Orrio, a Catholic laywoman who lived through the Spanish Civil War and felt called to form a missionary congregation dedicated to serving the poorest, abandoned, and sick. Initially established as a pious union, the institute was canonically erected in 1946 and later elevated to an Institute of Pontifical Right. The first members pronounced vows in 1946, and the institute soon began missionary work, with its first mission established in India in 1948. Over the decades it expanded globally, with missions in Cameroon, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa, along with communities in Europe and the Americas. Throughout its history, the M.C.J. has remained committed to missionary evangelization and service to those on society’s margins.
