Charism

The Little Sisters of Africa share the same Franciscan-inspired charism as the brothers, embracing a life of radical simplicity and poverty in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Their daily life is shaped by fraternal community living, rooted in prayer, work, and mutual service. The sisters dedicate themselves to serving the poor, youth, and marginalized, especially through education, catechesis, and social outreach. They practice inculturated evangelization, living and proclaiming the Gospel within the African context with humility, joy, and authenticity. In all that they do, their vocation is to be “sisters to all,” living among the people and witnessing Christ through love, compassion, and simplicity.

Short History

The Little Sisters of Africa were founded together with the brothers’ branch by Fr. Ricardo “Padre Pekupeku” in Morogoro, Tanzania, and were canonically approved on 9 July 1997 by Bishop Telesphor Mkude, DD, then Bishop of Morogoro.
The sisters arose from the same pastoral vision: to form a local African religious family living close to the poor. As the mission expanded—especially through education and parish outreach—the need for a women’s branch became clear. The sisters now serve in schools, parishes, catechetical centers, and social programs, particularly supporting children, young women, and vulnerable families.
They live and work under the authority of the local bishop, as part of a developing diocesan religious family.
