Contemplative missionaries rooted in the Gospel who proclaim the Good News ad gentes, live in community with emphasis on prayer and work (Ora et Labora), and serve in evangelization, pastoral care, and integral human development throughout the world.

The Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill (CMM) was founded from Mariannhill Monastery in South Africa by Abbot Franz Pfanner in 1882. Originally a Trappist community, the monks combined prayer with active missionary work, establishing schools, clinics, and missions among the local people. Their outreach grew quickly, drawing local candidates and lay helpers, which created a need for a distinct missionary institute.
In 1909, Pope Pius X formally separated Mariannhill from the Trappists, creating the CMM as a missionary congregation of pontifical right. Since then, its members have served internationally, especially in Africa, Europe, and the Americas, focusing on evangelization, education, and pastoral care while fostering local vocations and community development.
