Short History

The Canons Regular of St. Augustine trace their origins back to early communities of clergy living under a common rule in the ancient Church, organized over centuries into canonical houses following the Rule of St. Augustine, emphasizing prayer, community life, and pastoral ministry. Unlike mendicant orders, they live in stable communities attached to a church or abbey while serving the surrounding faithful.
In 1959, various individual congregations of Augustinian canons united into the Confederation of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, approved by an Apostolic Brief from Pope John XXIII, to strengthen bonds among the several congregations and foster fraternal charity in living Augustinian canonical life. This Confederation includes historic canonical congregations such as the Canons Regular of the Lateran, Congregation of Windesheim, and others across Europe and beyond, continuing a centuries-old tradition of community and ministry.
