To be “migrants with the migrants” — living the Gospel by serving migrants, refugees, seafarers and people on the move with pastoral care, advocacy for human dignity and rights, and integration of faith and culture in missionary service worldwide.

Short History

The Scalabrinians were founded on 28 November 1887 in Piacenza, Italy by Saint John Baptist Scalabrini, Bishop of Piacenza, in response to the massive wave of Italian and European emigration to the Americas, recognizing the urgent social and spiritual needs of migrants and their families. The first missions were established in the United States and Brazil, and the congregation grew as it accompanied migrants in their journeys and struggles.
Today the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo is a Catholic clerical religious institute of pontifical right present in 30+ countries across five continents. Its members — priests and brothers — live in community and work in parishes, migrant pastoral centers, reception shelters, seafarers’ ministries, and advocacy networks, witnessing to Christ’s love among people on the move and promoting their human and spiritual dignity.
