Charism

To live and proclaim charity in all things (In Omnibus Charitas) by serving Christ in the poorest and most vulnerable — especially children and youth in need, the elderly, persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the abandoned, and those lacking support — combining evangelization with works of mercy in the spirit of their founder.

Short History

The congregation was founded on March 24, 1908 in Como, Italy by Saint Luigi Guanella (1842–1915), an Italian priest inspired to serve the marginalized, especially the poor and disabled. St. Guanella had earlier opened charitable works on the banks of the River Adda, and those early efforts grew into a formal community of priests and brothers professing the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience under the name Servants of Charity in recognition of their mission of love and service.
The institute was later recognized as a religious congregation of pontifical right, growing and spreading its mission across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Guanellians now serve worldwide in parishes, special education and rehabilitation centers, homes for the elderly, and other charitable ministries, continuing St. Guanella’s vision of making divine charity visible through compassionate service to those most in need.
