To serve Christ in the sick and needy, especially through health care, social services, and hospitality ministries, following the example of St. John of God, the founder, embodying compassionate care and mercy
The Hospitaller Order of St. John of God was founded in the 16th century by St. John of God in Granada, Spain, to care for the sick and those abandoned by society. The brothers grew in reputation for their hospitality and care, establishing hospitals, care homes, and social services throughout Europe.
Over time the Order spread globally, serving in health care and social outreach in many countries across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. In 2015, the former Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd merged with the Hospitallers, continuing the mission of compassionate service to the poor and vulnerable under the larger Order’s structure.
