Short History

The Betharram Fathers were founded in 1832 in Bétharram, France, by Saint Michael Garicoïts, a Basque priest deeply committed to responding to the spiritual needs of the people after the turmoil of the French Revolution. He gathered companions to live in community, rooted in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with a mission of evangelization and teaching the young and formation for Christian living. The institute received pontifical approval in 1877, and over the years its members spread to many countries, living in small communities and serving in mission, parish work, and education.
Today the congregation is international, present in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, with priests and brothers working in parishes, mission centers, and educational and pastoral ministries, continuing their founder’s mission of witnessing Christ’s love through word and service.
