Short History

St. Joseph’s Missionary Society was founded on 19 March 1866 at Mill Hill, London, England, by Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, with the specific mission of sending missionaries to foreign lands to spread the Catholic faith and support the growth of local Churches. From its beginning, the Society sent priests and lay members to regions needing evangelization, with its first missions in India in the 1870s.
Over the following decades, the Mill Hill Missionaries expanded globally across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, adapting their missionary witness to cultural contexts while serving the most in need through pastoral care, education, and social outreach. Today the Society includes priests, lay perpetual members, and lay associates who collaborate in mission work and vocations promotion worldwide.
