To evangelize and serve the poorest and most abandoned in the world, living the missionary call of Christ with simplicity and zeal, especially through preaching, parish and missionary work, retreats, youth ministry, and outreach to the marginalized, under the guidance of Mary Immaculate.
The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate were founded on January 25, 1816 in Aix-en-Provence, France, by Saint Eugène de Mazenod, a priest dedicated to renewing the faith of the poor after the turmoil of the French Revolution and preaching the Gospel to neglected rural populations. Initially named the Missionaries of Provence, they were approved as the Oblates of Mary Immaculate by Pope Leo XII on February 17, 1826. From their earliest days, the Oblates committed themselves to mission work, embracing the evangelical counsels and a life of community and service.
Over the ensuing centuries the Oblates expanded globally, establishing missions in Canada, the United States, Africa, Asia, and many other regions, with priests and brothers engaging in diverse ministries including parish leadership, education, retreat centers, and social justice work. Today they are present in 60+ countries with nearly 4,000 members, continuing their founder’s mission to bring the Good News especially to the poor and abandoned.
