To contemplate, live and proclaim the love of God revealed in the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, especially through Eucharistic adoration, pastoral care, missionary outreach, education, and service to the most needy, living in fraternal community and faithfulness to the Church.
The SS.CC. was founded in 1800 in Paris, France by Fr. Pierre-Marie Coudrin and Henriette Aymer de Chevalerie during the upheaval of the French Revolution when the practice of the faith was suppressed and priests were in hiding. Inspired by visions and a shared sense of mission, they professed vows on Christmas Eve 1800 and began a community dedicated to living and spreading devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, even as they faced danger and persecution for their faith.
Approved by Rome in 1817, the congregation soon expanded its missionary work to the Pacific Islands, Europe, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. One of its best-known members was St. Damien de Veuster, who served leprosy patients on Molokai, Hawaii. Today the SS.CC. includes priests, brothers, sisters, and associated lay members present in over 30+ countries, continuing their founder’s mission of proclaiming God’s love through prayer, adoration, and service.
