To live the Gospel in the spirit of St. Charles de Foucauld — dwelling with and among ordinary people, especially the poor and marginalized, in a life of contemplation, simple fraternity, manual work, prayer, and presence, witnessing Christ’s love by sharing the everyday lived experience of others.

Short History

The Little Brothers of Jesus were founded in 1933 in Paris, France, by René Voillaume and four companions, inspired by the example and spirituality of St. Charles de Foucauld. They established their first community in French Algeria (North Africa), living as “brothers among the people” with a life of prayer, labor, and friendship, initially in desert settings.
After World War II they adapted their life to small fraternities embedded in ordinary neighborhoods, combining Eucharistic adoration and contemplative prayer with daily work and life among the working poor. On 13 June 1968, Pope Paul VI officially recognized them as a congregation of pontifical right, a status confirmed after revisions to their constitutions in later years. Today they live in small communities worldwide, carrying forward their founder’s mission of faithful presence among people in everyday life.
