To live the Gospel in simplicity, fraternity, and presence among the poorest and most marginalized, especially through prayer, fraternal life, and sharing in the everyday lives of ordinary people, following the spirit of St. Charles de Foucauld and evangelizing by witness rather than by words alone.
The Little Brothers of the Gospel were founded on 18 July 1956 by Fr. René Voillaume, a member of the Little Brothers of Jesus, who sought to create a new fraternity dedicated more specifically to living and proclaiming the Gospel among the poor and working classes. The congregation grew out of the broader Foucauldian family of communities inspired by the life and spirituality of Charles de Foucauld, emphasizing simplicity, presence, and fraternity rather than formal apostolic institutions.
Traditionally recognized as a religious congregation of diocesan right, the brothers established small fraternities in France, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Argentina, and later throughout the world. They live in small fraternities embedded in ordinary neighborhoods, sharing life with those on the margins while seeking to be a contemplative‑in‑action witness to Christ’s love. The Little Brothers of the Gospel are present in Europe, the Americas, and Africa (including Kenya and Tanzania) where they have lived and worked among local communities since the late 20th century.
