Charism

To be an instrument of sanctity and evangelization in the Church by fostering a deep life of prayer, devotion to the Eucharist, love of the Blessed Virgin Mary, fidelity to the Pope, and the proclamation of the Gospel — especially to youth and families — through liturgy, catechesis, art, music, culture, and formation. Members pursue Christian perfection with a special emphasis on beauty as a means of evangelization.

Short History

The Heralds of the Gospel originated in the 1960s in São Paulo, Brazil, where young Catholics under the leadership of João Scognamiglio Clá Dias began meeting to grow in faith and evangelization. This movement was canonically established in 1999 and received formal recognition as an International Association of Christ’s Faithful of Pontifical Right by Pope John Paul II in 2001, making it the first such association erected by the Holy See in the third millennium. Members — mostly consecrated lay men and women — live in community with a life of prayer, study, and evangelizing activity while maintaining the lay state, though some pursue the priesthood.
The Heralds have expanded to about 80 countries, engaging in parish outreach, youth formation, liturgical music, and artistic apostolates, and operate liturgical choirs, cultural events, publications, and educational activities. From the association have emerged two Societies of Apostolic Life approved in 2009 (Virgo Flos Carmeli for priests and Regina Virginum for women), reflecting aspects of the same charism.
