Charism

The charism of the Capuchin friars centers on a strict adherence to the Rule of St. Francis, emphasizing a life of PRAYER and CONTEMPLATION; radical poverty, minority (brotherhood), and evangelization.

Short History

The Capuchin Order arose in the early 16th century as a bold and inspired return to the pure spirit of St. Francis, born from a passionate desire to live the Gospel in radical poverty, simplicity, and contemplative devotion.
Led by visionaries like Matteo da Bascio, who embraced the pointed hood and rough habit as signs of fidelity to Francis, and organized by Ludovico da Fossombrone, the fledgling community endured persecution, imprisonment, and relentless opposition, yet persisted through courage, prayer, and the support of steadfast patrons like Duchess Caterina Cybo.
Officially recognized by POPE CLEMENT VII in 1528, the Capuchins committed themselves to prayer, preaching, austerity, and service, living in small hermitages, embracing solitude, and ministering humbly to the people. Their radical devotion and unwavering witness to the Gospel have inspired generations, offering anyone drawn to a life of holiness, simplicity, and fearless mission the opportunity to walk closely in the footsteps of St. Francis.
