Charism

Their charism is rooted in mercy and union with the suffering Christ, inspired by St. Gemma Galgani’s Passion-centered spirituality. The sisters live out compassion, sacrificial love, and service to the poor, sick, and marginalized, seeing Christ in those who suffer.

Short History

The Congregation of Sisters of St. Gemma Galgani was founded on 14 September 1947 in Kondoa, Dodoma Region, Tanzania, under the inspiration of Monsignor Stanislaus Ambrozin, a Passionist priest, and rooted in the spirituality of Italian mystic St. Gemma Galgani. What began with a handful of women committed to living a life of mercy and identifying with Christ’s suffering grew into a thriving religious family focused on education, healthcare, and service to those in need.
From its beginnings, the congregation expanded across the Diocese of Dodoma and beyond—serving in Kondoa, Singida, Morogoro, Dar es Salaam, Njombe, and Tanga, and even establishing connections in Europe. Over the decades, they have grown in numbers and apostolic outreach, celebrating milestones like their 75th Jubilee in 2022 and deepening their witness through prayer, education, healthcare, and empowerment ministries.
