Their charism is to live and proclaim the Gospel through a life of compassion, mercy, humility, and service in imitation of the Holy Family and the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. They are dedicated to serving the poorest and most needy, especially through education, health care, pastoral ministry, child protection and rehabilitation, and evangelization.
The Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family were founded on May 11, 1885 in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montiel in Benaguacil, Valencia, Spain, by the Capuchin priest Blessed Luis Amigó y Ferrer, O.F.M. Cap. He envisioned a community of sisters dedicated to the Franciscan-Capuchin spirit of poverty, humility, and mercy, living the Rule of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis and serving those in greatest need.
Approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1902, the congregation grew and expanded its mission globally. Today they are present in over 30 countries on four continents, including Tanzania, where they minister in Morogoro and Dar es Salaam. Their ministries include education, protection and rehabilitation of children and youth, health care, pastoral outreach, and service to people on the peripheries of society, always emphasizing compassionate presence.
