Charism

The charism of the Order of Preachers is rooted in the mission of preaching the Gospel for the salvation of souls, especially through study, prayer, community life, and preaching. Dominicans seek truth (Veritas) and are called to be instruments of God’s word through their rigorous intellectual formation, faithful liturgical life, and pastoral outreach. Their preaching includes homilies, teaching, theological engagement, writing, and evangelization in diverse contexts, all aimed at illuminating the faith and drawing people closer to Christ.

Short History

The Order of Preachers was founded by St. Dominic de Guzmán in 1216, approved by Pope Honorius III, in response to the need for well-prepared preachers to proclaim the Gospel and combat heresy in southern France. Dominic gathered men committed to prayer, study, community, and preaching, and the order quickly spread across Europe and then globally. Over eight centuries, Dominicans have become known for their intellectual tradition—producing saints like St. Thomas Aquinas—and for their missionary, educational, and pastoral ministries, serving the Church on every continent.
